If you buy Stata, you get a copy of Getting Started with Stata for Windows. This book is mostly concerned with how to create and save data, how to use logs, and other administrative topics. It does not deal with statistics.
The other section is using Statistics with Stata. This Version 7 book is by Lawrence C. Hamilton. You could buy it at the bookstore bundled with their textbook, or you can order it. It has a pretty decent chapter on the same stuff the other book covers. It also has a chapter on graph and eleven chapters on various statistics topics.
A complete set of Version 7 Stata manuals is on reserve in the library.
I directed, produced, and starred in Stata: The Movie.
Reaction was so favorable that I produced two sequels: Running Stata from Citrix and Using Saved Data.
